A farmer moves his family to South Africa and suffers a series of seemingly insurmountable losses. Through unlikely friendships and much needed divine intervention, he discovers his life's true purpose and it sustains his unwavering belief in the power of faith. A moving life journey of a man who, like his potatoes, grows his faith, unseen until the harvest.

This captivating and heart-wrenching South African production is a story of one man’s struggle for a better life for himself and his family. Angus Buchan is a Scottish farmer living in Zambia when the area’s constant political turmoil finally leads him to believe he must settle in a new country if he ever hopes to be truly prosperous. But, after settling into the agriculturally fruitful KwaZulu Midlands, the family Buchan come to realize that starting a new life isn’t necessarily going to be easy. Angus starts on a downward spiral of despair from which only a momentous restoration of faith can save him. Told partially in the Zulu language, FAITH LIKE POTATOES is a remarkably life-affirming film.

The fact that this is a true story definitely earns it more points in my book. Miracles always seem like fiction until they happen, then they're fact.
Faith Like Potatoes chronicles the journey of a farmer, Angus Buchan, through his early life in Africa and the many troubles and tribulations he suffered before and after giving his life to Christ.
We see the amazing transformation that occurred, and how God used him mightily to perform miracles and preach to multitudes. The overriding message in the movie is his faith in planting potatoes in ground that could not support the crop and believing that God would bless the land and provide a bountiful harvest.
The long wait that ensues from planting to harvest time climaxes in a scene where the first potato is dug up and behold, it is a good and healthy yield!

This is a good movie overall, despite its somewhat slow pace. It has a strong Christian message, that may not win skeptics over, but serves to reinforce the faith of Christians. Since this is a true story, there is no allowance to critique the storyline, but we can appreciate the film-making and acting which were well done.

Review Summary

Positive Elements Great depiction of how a short tempered constantly offended farmer finds Christ and experiences complete transformation
Negative Elements There is a handsome helping of anger outbursts and language not suitable for young children at the beginning (before Angus was saved) but not including those in the movie would have meant a half-told story.
Morality Meter Excellent
